Andy, for better or worse — and most people, I think, would say worse — Hollywood is ruled by this business principle: similar but different. They don’t really want original content, but prefer stories which hew rather closely to preexisting content. The trick for writers is to come up with unique, complex characters who transform conventional story concepts into something distinctive.
