Barb, that’s the thing about ‘similar but different’ business model: At points, both creatives and audience become sick of the same old thing. We’re seeing that this summer, a confluence of under-performing franchise films and the rise of some wonderful original movies: The Big Sick, A Ghost Story, Baby Driver, Dunkirk. Earlier this year, Get Out — with a production budget of $4.5M — has now grossed over $250M worldwide. That is some series ROI!
Moonlight is a great example. Production budget of just under $2M. I just checked. It has grossed $65M worldwide.
It’s critical we support original movies when they come out and we hear they have a good story like these noted here. Hollywood ONLY cares about $$. If original movies make $$, Hollywood will make more original movies.
