Barry, I'm not even sure we should consider the presence of conflict as a rule. It's just a given. Hard to imagine any form of good, compelling drama without conflict. At the very least tension in every scene.

But you hit on the larger point: feel free to play around with conventions. Subvert expectations. Go against type. All in service of telling a good story.
