Cameron, you tap into a key driver of the story: Bell’s guilt. I like to ask this question of the Protagonist character in the story-crafting process: Why does *this* story *have* to happen to *this* character at *this* time? Clearly, this case from the past ‘resurrects’ in the present because Bell has unfinished business. She is — in my language — living in a state of Disunity. In my view, this situation arises in order for Bell to pursue redemption. As you suggest, her guilt drives basically *everything* including virtually all of her choices.
