Dale, thanks for that history lesson. And your final point — writers have always taken liberties — is the real takeaway. Never let supposed rules get in the way of creative inspiration. In screenwriting, that’s absolutely a rock solid truth. When William Goldman, arguably the dean of contemporary screenwriting, made up and used the verb “barrelasses” in the script for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, that pretty much frees us up to do what we need to do to convey the story in the best, most entertaining way possible.
