Gareth, there's Receptive Writing which is where the subconscious flows into our consciousness. Then there is Executive Writing where we train a critical eye on what we've written. Without the former, it's likely we end up with a lifeless narrative. Without the latter, we may end up with no narrative structure at all. Best of luck with YOUR writing!
