Great analysis, Ant, and I think you’re right: This movie is a perfect pandemic lockdown film because of the repetitive nature of the time loop. Our experience — each day the same as before — matches the experience of Nyles and Sarah.
I also like the way your observation: What was Nyles’s life like before the time loop. Clearly, not perfect. Hell, he can’t even remember what his job was.
It’s interesting that Hulu bought the picture’s distribution rights just as the pandemic was just about to hit U.S. shores. There’s no way they could have figured that into their decision to drop $22M on the film’s right, is there? That would be incredible prescience.
Care. Give a fuck. Connection. You know what would be an interesting double feature thematically would be Little Miss Sunshine and Palm Springs. Similar comedic tone and themes.
Thanks for your insight!
