Here’s a big takeaway for me: Make full use of the story’s subculture. The script for Zootopia felt like the writers left no stone unturned when looking for story material in the animal kingdom. A lot of it for laughs, but equally so character stuff, revealing of individual’s inner selves and psychological nature. I read so many scripts which scratch the surface and feel like they didn’t take full advantage of their story universe. Not Zootopia. It feels like they really immersed themselves in that place and with those characters, and they maximized both entertainment and narrative value. A great lesson for all of us no matter what special subculture we work with in our own stories.
