I always tell my students that by the end of Act One, a script reader should know where the story is going, but not how it’s going to get there. The script for Crazy Rich Asians is a great example of this.
Girl gets Guy. Girl loses Guy. Girl gets Guy back. We know that.
We also know that by virtue of Nick’s family’s wealth, we are in store for a bunch of wish fulfillment moments akin to the first class airplane trip to Asia.
But when you read the script, there are plenty of surprises in terms of the specifics of the plot — scenes and sequences — which give the story a familiar, but fresh feel.
