I am reminded of this quote from the late great Harold Ramis: "For me, a screenplay starts with something I can tell other people in five minutes." You have to be able to start there: What is the simplest version of the story? Then in telling that story, what is their reaction? But you're right, we need to get outside our own bubble. Movies do not exist in a vacuum. As Charlton Heston said: "The problem with movies as art is they are commerce."
