If individuation — the process of integrating the conscious with the unconscious, for the purpose of self-actualization — is the goal of one’s life, then one theme of Eternal Sunshine is to support that in a morality tale sort of way. In attempting to take the easy route to a semblance of psychological health — erase memories of a failed romance — Clementine and Joel discover they are still drawn toward each other. This suggests there is something deeper within their psyche than mental memories, perhaps memories of a more primordial nature — emotions, passions, feelings. In the end, flawed though their relationship may be because to their own imperfect natures, Joel and Clementine end up together, willing to have another go at it, romantic warts and all.
