J, I'm more of a "need" guy myself! A Protagonist may accomplish their want -- like Carl does in Up, getting the house to the top of Paradise Falls -- but that's not the end of the story. His need is to embrace the spirit of adventure (which has been dormant inside him since his wife's death) and come back to life. Russell (and to a lesser degree Kevin and Dug) are what instigate his unity arc and in the end does connect with his need.
Sometimes want and need coalesce, but there are occasions when the story isn't finished until the Protagonist has confronted their need, either for good or bad. That's why I call it their Unconscious Goal, as in a way, it is the reason for their journey.
