Let me add this line to yours, Roo, as I think it provides an interest context to the dialogue you have zeroed in on. When Sofía says this:

“We are alone. No matter what they tell you, we women are always alone.”

This is a woman’s story. Set in a patriarchal culture. Alone when men choose not to support women. And yet, this pair of women do support each other.

Here again, I feel like there is something at work with the parallel between Women and Employee / Men and Employer.

It’s a struggle being a woman in that type of setup. No matter how safe and secure they may seem, ultimately they are alone.

“I like being dead” Cleo says at one point, playfully with Pepe on the roof of the house. Perhaps she is just enjoying the peacefulness of the moment. Perhaps, too, she is expressing a subconscious desire to be free of a system in which she is a second class citizen.
