M = Mentor. A = Attractor. Most often allies to the Protagonist, Mentor most intimately tied to the Protagonist’s intellectual development, Attractor their emotional development.

There can also be False Mentors and False Attractors.

As far as these five character archetypes, I use them in my writing and teaching, and have a book coming out in 2021 which delves deeply into the subject: The Protagonist’s Journey: Character Driven Screenwriting and Storytelling.
