Marly, thanks for sharing that anecdote and your reflections on visual and emotional storytelling. I hammer home the former point all the time with my students: Movies are primarily a visual medium. Per the latter, that’s why is critical to create an audience identification with the story’s Protagonist because that emotional connection to who they are and what their stakes are in the context of the plot is the single best way I know to — using your word — transport us out of the real world and into the story world.
