My take on key characters and their respective archetypes functions:
Protagonist: Ruben. It's his story, the story is told through his POV, all the characters are associated with his psychological journey.
Attractor: Lou. The character most closely associated with Ruben's emotional life. The fact that he eventually is able to give her up, albeit reluctantly, is one of the most significant signs of his personal metamorphosis. He evolves from depending upon her and their 'touring life' to by the end alone and facing his present and future without someone to support him codependently.
Mentor: Joe. As the leader of the deaf camp, he provides wisdom, e.g., challenging Ruben whether he knows the difference between working and surviving, and *living* and surviving. He also supports Ruben as he adjusts to deaf life. He also metes out some tough love by insisting that Ruben needs to leave the deaf community.
Trickster: Jenn. Ostensibly his mentor, ultimately she is overcome by her addiction and overdoses, after stealing money from Ruben. Ally to enemy.
And the Nemesis? Ruben is in recovery from being a heroin addict, yet while he may be clean from drugs, he is not free from addiction. That includes life as a rock musician, the touring life, his old ways of being. He needs to change. From a mile-high view of the story, *that* is why he loses his hearing because he is living an inauthentic life at the beginning. The resistance he demonstrates over and over again is in part an expression of his addiction to his old life. And *that* is his Nemesis.
That's my take on what I call the Family of Characters, who each is and the nature of their interrelationships.
