Nechesa, you make a really great point, one which I hope we can explore when we delve into characters on Wednesday, and that is the choices the characters make. They ARE extreme and, as such, surprising. And you are right: The script and movie are a great reminder to us as writers to push out our characters, or more accurately, dig into them and put them in extreme situations where they will respond in a more visceral, instinctual way.
