Nice work, FTFL. Your lineup of character types spotlights how the entire Armitage crew are Tricksters throughout until their ‘masks’ drop revealing that they are Nemeses — with the exception of Jeremy who is a Nemeis figure throughout. Indeed, the larger community of Armitage friends can be viewed as Tricksters. That variability, even unreliability I would imagine would resonate with black viewers of the film, how relations with white people is oftentimes tricky: ally… or enemy. I suspect that was a conscious choice by Jordan Peele, the writer-director of the movie, to explore the dynamic of a black man betrayed by his supposed white benefactors.
