One thing the scene-by-scene breakdown makes abundantly clear is how the pace of the story hits overdrive in the third act. From 01:37:00–01:50:00, it’s a series of quick cuts and cross-cuts building to the Final Struggle between Clarice and Gumb.

This is the way it should be in most, if not all movies, an escalation of stakes and pace to build toward the climax of the story.

Another thing the breakdown underscores is how little screen time Lecter has in the movie. I track it at a little over 16 minutes. Amazing how powerful an influence the character has in the story with that brief amount of screen time.

The Silence of the Lambs is a perfect movie to explore ideas like The Protagonist’s Journey, Transformation, Character Archetypes, the essence of storytelling. I look forward to digging into it this week and invite your comments.
