Sharon, not knowing all the details, let me just say this. Two things. First, you have to trust your own creative instincts. Ultimately, that's all you have, your OWN take on the material. Yes, you may benefit from other's feedback, but if it runs counter to your take on the material, you have to go with your gut. Second, the story rules. If you wobble in terms of your own instincts in the face of criticism, then you must do what best serves the story.
My suggestion: Step back from the story, go away for a few days, come back, assess the feedback, compare to your story, and as always, go with your feelings. Until someone pays you to write/rewrite material, you are the arbiter of the narrative.
I hope that helps.
