Simon, I believe you are correct in that script readers often look for a writer’s transgressions against so-called screenwriting “rules” as a way of dinging the script and giving it a pass. So while a writer can use “we see … we move … we hear,” if they’re in a position attempting get past the Hollywood’s threshold guardians (i.e., script readers), be prepared to get dinged.

The thing is, 9 times out of 10, a writer can bypass the whole “we see” conundrum by simply describing what’s on screen. You don’t need to write:

We see a monkey on a motorcycle.

Instead write:

A monkey on a motorcycle.
