Steven, I’ve read scripts which hit all the story beats in STC which had no characters of note, no emotional resonance for the reader, and thereby IMHO a failed screenplay. Frankly, I don’t care what paradigm a writer may choose to work with. The big thing for me is how they get there. If they immerse themselves in the lives of their characters and allow the characters to drive the story-crafting process, chances are no matter how formulaic that paradigm may be, as long as the writer has allowed the characters the freedom to shape the story structure through their (the characters’) own agency, then there’s a good chance that story will succeed.
