That first side of Mildred’s dialogue you’ve spotlit, that really goes to the core of who she is and where she is psychologically as a result of her daughter’s death. And behind that anger, as we learn in the story, there is shame and sadness at her culpability in her daughter’s murder — because she had an argument with the girl and wouldn’t let her use the car.
