I have a slightly different take on the car crash. The Coens have a sustained interest in the fickle nature of fate. In fact, I wrote a post about it: The Coen Brothers, Storytelling, and Fate. Check it out and read that poem by Ethan. The fact the car slams into Chigurh… it’s just Fate. Like the coin toss. Fate. I think you’re right that Chigurh uses the coin toss to exact an individual’s fate as a way of deflecting personal responsibility. It comes up heads… you die. Tails… you live. He’s just enforcing Fate. But the car crash, that’s just straight out of Coen brother storytelling instincts (it’s probably in the novel anyhow). “The Drunken Driver Has The Right Of Way.” People do what they do. No matter. Fate does what *IT* does and *IT* has the last word.
