The script to Coco is a master class in how one can write a story with a classic Hero’s Journey structure, yet feel organic and singular in its articulation. In Miguel’s travels into the World of the Dead (the Extraordinary World), he yearns to return to the Ordinary World from which he is separated. But something has to change, as returning home to same old ways of being will not be a satisfactory state. So as J. Campbell says — the whole point of the Hero’s Journey is transformation — Miguel EMBRACES his authentic nature (Musician) — learns surprising truths about his past, and in the process also changes his family’s attitudes about music.
We will get more into this in the Plot and Theme posts, but Coco is Pixar hitting on all creative cylinders, great to see after a few sequels which were less inspired.
