They get some money, I believe around $30K. They only visit L.A. on the Academy’s tab for a week leading up to the awards ceremony. Then they head home. They are responsible for writing another script within a year as part of the Nicholl deal. Other than that, they’re on their own. Judging from my interviews and pursuant conversations with Nicholl winners, they do tend to stay in touch as a kind of support group. There’s only been 1 Nicholl winner I’ve interviewed who did not get representation, so almost always the writers do come back out to L.A. on their own dime for general meetings, etc.
