This line from Eden:
“I am different. I’m free. All that useless pain, it’s gone. It’s something anyone can have, Will, and I want you to have it too.”
It’s just creepy. I grew up in a conservative religious family and am well versed in the world of evangelical Christians, so this line doubles up in meaning and impact for me. There is a desperation in subtext, basically ‘please believe what I do because that will make me feel better about myself’ vibe. The line, delivered as early as it is in the story, contributes to the sense of impending shit-hitting-the-fan. Plus it speaks to the cultism at work in the story.
