Well put, James: Even as unsympathetic as he is — stealing money from his mother, his cantankerous and pompous personality, his anger issues — there is a point of connection to him as you state. Failing. Each of us has failed and to see Miles suffer as he does, we can’t help but identify with those feelings.

And yes, a brilliant performance.
