Yeah, funny when facts get in the way of conventional wisdom. And apart from spec script deals, what would Mr. Kirkpatrick have to say about the last 5 years of Black List scripts which — again — are dominated at the top by dramas? I’ll agree with him to the extent that a poorly written script — regardless of genre — does no one any good. But a great story is a great story, no matter the genre. Fortunately there are writers who don’t listen to people like Mr. Kirkpatrick and choose to write stories they’re passionate about. There’s nothing wrong with studying the marketplace, if especially you’re a genre writer. But whenever someone comes along and says, ‘This doesn’t work, that does work,’ invariably movies emerge which blow up that theory.
